Save the Hector's dolphin

Hector's dolphins, named after 19th century New Zealand zoologist, Sir James Hector, are listed on the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN) Red List as "endangered" and are among the most rare of the world’s 32 marine dolphin species. Their North Island counterpart, the Maui dolphin, is critically endangered and are the world’s most rare marine cetacean – their entire population is now estimated at about 55 individuals. Estimates suggest more than 26,000 Hector’s dolphins lived around New Zealand’s shores in the 1970s. Today, it is thought that about 7000 remain – less than one-third of the 1970s’ population – a staggering decline. Find out more about how you can help this playful, surfing dolphin at www.stoptheirextinction.org.nz

Go diving with Dive Otago

Derek just completed his PADI Open Water Diver Certificate with Dive Otago and had such a great time. If you're interested in extending your enjoyment of the ocean then we highly recommend doing a course with the cool team at Dive Otago. You can drop in to say hi to them at 2 Wharf St, Dunedin (look for the big orange starfish off Portsmouth Drive) or call them on 0800 DIVE OTAGO or email them at info@diveotago.co.nz You won't be disappointed. If you've already got your ticket, then make sure you connect with the Dive Otago club: it's a really vibrant group with lots of cool trips and adventures going on.
